Rounded Rectangle: Training Principles & Methods
At Pooches Galore we believe that training your dog should be a fun and enjoyable experience for you and your dog, lucky really as this method of training being the most effective.

We achieve this by conditioning the dog to do what we require of them. Conditioning is one of the most important ways a dog learns. There are two types, operant and classical. Like humans, dogs learn that there are consequences to their actions. If the consequences are positive they are more likely to repeat the action. For example, a dog will hear the word sit, when he put his bum on the floor he got a treat. Next time he hears that word he is more likely to put his bum on the floor. This is operant conditioning. Classical conditioning has to do with making associations and is therefore less formal, e.g. the rattle of a lead means they are going for a walk.

Why train your dog?
There are several reasons why responsible dog owners should train their dogs. Below are just a few reasons:

A dogs mind is equivalent to a 5 year old child’s and it will remain so throughout their life. It can only learn through repetition of practical knowledge. A dog’s temperament, physical and mental characteristics will be developed through two channels:
Breeding, rearing, early socialisation
Growing up, owner obligation, education.

Not only does training help you to have a more responsive dog it also helps you to have immediate control over your dog.

Dogs are social animals and without proper training they will behave like animals. Nearly all behaviour problems are normal canine activities which occur at the wrong time.

Obedience training is also an easy way to establish the social hierarchy. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here” or “sit” they are showing compliance and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as the leader of the pack by using extreme measures.

A well trained dog is more confident and can be allowed more freedom.
